Co-op in Review: November, 20, 2014

This week, our studies take us back to ancient Palestine, and the Israelites.  The Israelites, last we left them, were wandering in the desert, waiting to enter the Promised Land.  This week, they take the land that God had promised to them, under the leadership of their General, Joshua.  The Dialectic class completed their Ancient World Religions display boards this week, and wow, do they look great!  The Upper Grammar kids worked hard at creating salt maps of the Promised land--learning all of the major geographic features of the land.  The Lower Grammar kids made shofars, like the Israelite soldiers would have blown when the walls of Jericho came tumbling down.  The Five in a Row class read the Thanksgiving classic, "Cranberry Thanksgiving."  They then made beautiful candle and cranberry centerpieces for their family's Thanksgiving feast.

Co-op Service Project

On November 20, our co-op held a Christmas book drive to benefit kids who are in Foster Care.  Each child brought in a book for a child of their age and gender.  Together we wrapped the books with homemade wrapping paper and prayed for the kids who would receive them.  

Co-op in Review: November 13, 2014

The history classes continue to study the very first Greek cultures.  This week, they learned about the climate and topography of the region.  The kids also learned about what the Greeks ate, drank, wore and did day to day.  The Dialectic class continued their unit on Ancient World Religions.  Their projects are coming along wonderfully!  The Upper Grammar class made lap books about Ancient Greece.  The Lower Grammar class made animated Greek masks and had an olive tasting.  The Five in a Row class read the book, "Three Names." In this book, a grandmother reminisces about times spent on the prairie with her dog, Three Names.  They made prairie scrapbooks and even learned how to play marbles!

Co-op in Review: November 6, 2014

This week, our history classes learned about the earliest Greek cultures--the Mycenaeans and Minoans.  God gifted the Greeks to be uniquely inventive people who specialized in new ideas.  However, they did not know the Creator God of the universe, and used that inventive spirit to invent a world of Gods and Goddesses who interacted with people and nature constantly.  The kids also learned about the relationships of the Greeks with their neighbors and the famous war that resulted--the mythological Trojan War.  The Dialectic class continued with their World Religions projects, but the Grammar classes did activities and crafts in celebration of the Greeks.  The Upper Grammar class made Trojan horses out of shoe boxes and paper towel rolls.  The Lower Grammar classes used toilet paper rolls to create mythological Greek gods.  The Five in a Row class read the book, "Harold and the Purple Crayon."  Harold takes a walk at night, armed with only a purple crayon and creates a masterpiece landscape!  The kids made accordion books celebrating all things purple!
