Co-op In Review: September 13, 2012

This week, all of our three Tapestry classes started a three week long study of the people, geography, culture and history of South America.  During this first week, the kids learned about the European influences that shaped the history of South America, specifically the colonization of much of South America by Spain.  While the Upper Grammar and Lower Grammar classes discussed and did projects related to South America, the Dialectic class will be spending the next three weeks of class time learning about elections, campaigns and the upcoming Presidential election.  This week, the kids Dialectic were divided into two campaigns, three kids were assigned to the Republican Party and three kids were assigned to the Democrat Party.  Throughout the next three weeks, the kids will work together to stage a mock campaign.  This week, the kids learned the differences between Republicans and Democrats, learned some basics about American politics, analyzed political slogans and campaign commercials, and began to work on their own campaign ads.  The Upper Grammar kids discussed what they were learning about South America and then made super cool rain sticks.  The Lower Grammar kids talked about South America, but then did a neat apple tree painting project to remind them of what they learned in literature this week where they read "Johnny Appleseed."  The Five in a Row kids read the book, "I Am An Artist."  This book teaches kids that by exploring the delights of nature, they can be inspired to create.  The kids then created their own paintings, inspired by nature!
