Co-op in Review: April 13, 2017

"Here at our sea-washed sunset gates shall stand, a mighty woman, with a torch . . . and her name, mother of exiles."  This week, our classes learned about this mighty woman,  the Statue of Liberty and the exiles that she welcomed . . . waves of immigrants who flooded into Ellis Island and the United States towards the end of the 1800's.  The Lower Grammar class made Statue of Liberty crowns and torches.  The Upper Grammar class did a Statue of Liberty art project and simulation.  The Dialectic class started a two week, in-depth immigration simulation and the Rhetoric class discussed in depth the issues and experiences that faced the massive number of newcomers to America.  The Five in a Row class read the book, "Gingerbread Baby."  Then they made gingerbread houses!!

Service Project!

For our spring service project, the kids made cards and wrote notes to soldiers, who are putting their lives on the line every day, to protect the precious freedoms we enjoy every day in America.  May God bless them and their families.  

Co-op in Review: April 6, 2017

This week, our classes completed their studies on Africa by studying the wars, weapons, slaves, crafts and skills of different African people groups.  The older kids continued to discuss European imperialism by looking at various ways imperialism affected the societies involved and analyzed imperialism from a Biblical perspective.  Our Lower Grammar kids made scary African masks.  The Upper Grammar class made cool African sculptures out of wire.  The Five in a Row class read the book, "Mouse Paint."  They then made a cute mouse craft out of shapes and played games!

Co-op in Review: March 30, 2017

This week, our history classes all studied the continent of Africa.  They learned about the government, relation and other social events and rituals of the African people and groups.  The older classes also studied Africa, but they focused more on the scramble to colonize by European countries anxious to expand their territories for social, political and economic reasons.  The Lower Grammar class made African drums, while the Upper Grammar class made African style tie-dye art.  The Five in a Row class read the book, "Zin Zin Violin."  This clever book teaches kids all about the different instruments in an orchestra!

Co-op End-of-Unit Celebration!

To celebrate the ends of both Unit 2 and Unit 3, our Co-op had a big celebration!  Many of the kids came dressed in Civil War era attire.  There was a feast consisting of foods from the time periods we studied, and each student had the opportunity to share what he or she learned over the past two units.  It was a great night of sharing what we've been learning, but most importantly, a great night of fellowship and friendship!
