Co-op in Review: November 2, 2017

The event that finally pulled America out of the Great Depression was World War II.  After what was known as the Great War, just 20 years earlier, many thought there would never be another world-wide war.  But, this second great war was far worse than the first.  Democracies were in danger, communist ideas were spreading and evil dictators were taking over and wanting to conquer more and more lands.  Germany was left in shambles after WWI, and a charismatic leader names Adolf Hitler gave the German people hope.  He also terrified much of the world, and for good reason.  The history classes all learned about the start of World War II.  And, the Five in a Row class read the book, "The Runaway Bunny."  They did some awesome bunny crafts and activities, too!

Co-op in Review: October 26, 2017

Many blamed the policies of President Herbert Hoover for the Great Depression, or at least blamed his lack of policy for the Depression.  So, when it was time to elect our president in 1932, Americans wanted a change.  And, they got a big change in Franklin Delano Roosevelt.  Roosevelt was a very active president, who inspired confidence in the American people.  His sweeping social policies were called the New Deal.  New Deal legislation was designed to pull America out of the Depression and put Americans to work.  Whether the New Deal accomplished this can be argued, because an even bigger event was on the horizon that definitely would pull America out of her economic hardships.  The older classes learned all about FDR and the New Deal.  And, the Five in a Row class read the book, "Katy No Pocket."  They then made aprons of their own--with pockets--just like Katy's!

Co-op in Review: October 19, 2017

This week, our students learned about a very difficult time in American History--the Great Depression.  The fun-loving, roaring 20's came to a screeching halt, with the stock market crashing, banks closing, factories shutting their doors, and 25% of American workers finding themselves without a job.  The younger classes did activities relating to the Great Depression, while the Dialectic class did a stock market simulation.  The Five in a Row class read the book, "Jessie Bear, What Will You Wear?" This classic children's book asks what a little bear wears all throughout his day and the reader discovers the answers!
