Co-op In Review: August 16, 2012

The Industrial Revolution!  That's what our history students studied this week.  The Industrial Revolution was a time of great scientific, technical growth and development.  Many new inventions came to be during the late 1700's and early 1800's.  Our economy was one of self-sufficiency, where people made for themselves everything they need.  As the Industrial Revolution took hold, our economy became more factory based, where items are now mass produced and purchased.  This also resulted in a shift from an agrarian lifestyle to more of an urban way of life.  In co-op the Dialectic class had a very hands-on lesson on how steam can provide power.  They made their own steam-powered boats, and then were able to put them to the test in a tub of water.  They learned a lot and had fun, too!  The Upper Grammar class did amazing and intricate sketches of steamboats.  These boys did a fantastic job and showed a lot of patience!  The Lower Grammar kids made water wheels, like those that would have provided power for factories and mills during the Industrial Revolution.  Instead of making them out of wood, they used Styrofoam plates and little plastic cups--but they were really able to demonstrate how the wheels move the water!  They also did an activity that allowed them to compare and contrast assembly line production with do-it-yourself production--as they made paper airplanes!  The Five in a Row class read the story, "The ABC Bunny."  This is the story of a bunny finding his way home and having some adventures and meeting some special friends along the way.  The kids made cute little bunnies out of paper plates, did a dress-up activity and even made weather wheels!
