Seriously, our co-op has the cutest kids ever! And, many of them were dressed as Civil War soldiers or in Civil War era clothing for our End of Unit 3 Celebration on February 28, 2013. Since the Civil War was the major topic in our studies this quarter, it was fitting that most of the night's activities revolved around it. We had a special guest with us--Alex Alonzo is a 19 year old college student and history expert. He is also a genuine Civil War reenactor. He ran the kids through some drills, gave a presentation on the Civil War history of the Southwestern United States and then took questions from the kids and showed them some of his Civil War antiques. He was amazing and the kids and their parents loved that he could come and make our evening extra special! For dinner, we had some authentic Civil War foods--some even from Civil War era recipes. The kids then recited their memory work. The Five in a Row bunch memorized the poem "Giraffes." While the history students memorized and recited the entire Gettysburg Address. The kids also had a chance to display the things they have worked so hard on all quarter long. What a fun evening. Great job, kids!
