The Civil War is over and the period known as Reconstruction is underway. The Civil War ruined the South. Leaving many cities burned, plantations destroyed and railroads unusable. And, now there are 4 million freed slaves, many with no education and most without an ability to obtain a decent job or any job at all. Some in the North are welcoming the southern states back into the Union, while others want them punished. Some in the south are happy to be back in the Union, while others are resentful of the North. Temporary, military governments are set up in the South, carpetbaggers are coming to down, many to take advantage of the unfortunate situation many are in, and Congress is very upset with the President--Andrew Johnson--who comes within one vote of being removed from office after an impeachment trial is held. Yikes! Will the country heal? Will the South recover? Will African Americans achieve equality? The next 100 years will answer these questions! In our co-op classes, the kids all did crafts that preview the next weeks topic--the life of the Plains Indians. The Dialectic class made dioramas of Plains Indian villages. The Upper and Lower Grammar classes made Peace Pipes. And, the Five in a Row class continued on their Desert unit. They read the book, "Roxaboxen". In this book, a group of children create an imaginary land, with houses and stores, on a hill they name Roxaboxen. The kids then made their own versions of Roxaboxen with playdough, sticks and feathers. They also made a yummy Roxaboxen snack out of graham crackers, frosting and M and M's.
