Happy Valentine's Day! Today's co-op started with a Valentine's Day Party! The kids exchanged Valentines, ate some yummy treats and heard a cute story--where they learned about God's love for us. After the party, it was time to get to work! The Civil War is coming to an end. The kids learned about General Grant's Total War tactics. Basically, he wanted to do whatever it took to end the war. It worked, but ravaged the South. General Sherman took Total War to the next level, buy marching his troops from Tennessee to the Atlantic Ocean--burning and destroying everything in their path. Finally, the Union troops were able to capture Petersburg and then the Confederate Capitol of Richmond, Virginia, ending the war and leaving General Lee no choice but to surrender to General Grant at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1965. Almost exactly 4 years after the first shots were fired. The Dialectic kids made beautiful Civil War Pop-up books. The Upper Grammar class carved the likeness of Abraham Lincoln out of bars of soap--messy and fresh smelling! They also made log cabins out of frosting and pretzel sticks! The Lower Grammar class made decorative fans-like a Southern Belle would have used during the Civil War era. And, the Five in a Row class started a unit on the Desert. They read the book, "Way Out in the Desert." They made creepy desert-dwelling snakes out of strips of construction paper.
