This week, we began our studies of the Civil War--probably one of the darkest, most divisive periods in American History. Tensions in America had been rising steadily over the issue of slavery and with the succession of several Southern States and newly elected President Lincoln's heartfelt desire to keep the country united, war was inevitable. The kids this week learned about some of the first battles of the Civil War. The first shots were fired at Ft. Sumter South Carolina. And, the first real battle occurred at a creek in Maryland called Bull Run. The Dialectic kids are in full swing with their Civil War simulation. The Union Army consists of Connor, Cayman and Daniel. While the Confederates are Cameron, Elli and Amberly. The Upper Grammar kids studied the famous Naval battle between the first two American ironside ships: the Virginia and the Monitor. They made awesome models of these two ships out of milk cartons and duct tape! The Lower Grammar kids discussed the early years of Abraham Lincoln. They then made neat books about our 16th president. The Five in a Row class read the book, "Owl Babies." These three little owls sure do love their mommy! They then painted adorable pictures of owls.
