We are now studying the middle of the Civil War. The War has lasted a lot longer than anyone could have imagined. There have been thousands of casualties and there is no end in sight. The Confederates, though out numbered and out supplied--are winning most of the battles. Until July of 1863. Two pivotal battles took place at the same time, hundreds of miles apart. In Vicksburg, Mississippi, the Unions are battling to take control of the Mississippi River from the Confederates. And, they do by laying siege on Vicksburg and eventually taking the key city. Meanwhile, General Lee makes an offensive by heading into Union territory and meeting the Union troops near the town of Gettysburg Pennsylvania. Gettysburg is a three day long bloodbath, and on the final day, the Confederates make a serious tactical error by charging right into the Union lines in an open field. The Union won this battle and it was the turning point of the War. The Dialectic kids continue to work on their simulation--making decisions both good and bad. The Upper Grammar and Lower Grammar classes joined forces to make Vicksburg Siege models out of cardboard, clay, rocks, sticks and toy soldiers. The Five in a Row class continues to study Owls, this week they read the book, "Good Night, Owl." They then made super cute owls using their handprints.
