This week, the History students continued their studies on the founding of New England. Specifically, this week they studied the founding of Rhode Island, Connecticut and New Hampshire. When we think of a Civil War, we automatically think of the American Civil War, the battle between the Union and the Confederate States. But, at this time, there was a Civil War brewing in England. The Puritans remaining in England were desperate to reform their homeland. The Civil War ended with the Puritans taking Parliament and executing the King, Charles I. The Rhetoric kids worked tirelessly on their original gameboards--at the end of the Unit, each of them will have made a beautifully hand crafted game that is fun to play and educational, too. The Dialectic kids started two projects--a Wigwam and a Colonial travel brochure. the Upper Grammar kids made really neat Native-inspired drums. And, the Lower Grammar students made memory boxes, like the Colonists would have brought over with them from Europe. They also ate yummy Johnnycakes! The Five in a Row class read the book, "Very Last First Time". It's about an Inuit girl who lives in northern Canada and goes hunting for mussels along the seabed in such a unique way! The kids then made igloos to remind them of what life is like in the Arctic! And, they had snow much fun playing in some "snow" themselves!
