This week starts a new unit for our Tapestry students. And, we delve into a new and exciting era--the Colonial Era! Elizabeth's nephew, James I, is now the King of England. He gave his permission and a Royal Charter to a group of British adventurers, businessmen and gentlemen to start a new colony in the New World. And they did just that. Founding Jamestown was not and easy task, and the problems outweighed the successes-at least at first. But, it went on to become the first permanent British colony on American soil. The Rhetoric students talked about the first British colony while eating chocolate chip cookies-an authentic Colonial food. Ha! The Dialectic kids made fishing lures-a very important tool for the colonists who depended on the seas for their food supplies. The Upper Grammar kids played some Colonial games. And, the Lower Grammar class made Native American dreamcatchers-to celebrate the love story of beautiful Pocahontas and her British husband John Rolfe. The Five in a Row class read the book, "The Big Green Pocketbook." A little girl starts out with an empty pocketbook, but after a day on the town, she collects enough items to tell quite a story! The kids then made their own pocketbooks and filled them with similar items!
