"From her beacon-hand glows world-wide welcome!" Yes, this week we are studying Lady Liberty and Ellis Island. The kids learned the history and significance of this symbol of America and freedom. The Statue of Liberty was a gift to the US from France, as a symbol of our friendship, and was dedicated on October 28, 1886. The Dialectic class started a three week unit on Immigration this week. They kicked the study off by learning about the immigration projects they will be completing--each student will either do a detailed family tree poster or write a fictional account of an immigrant or immigrant family. They also did a literature map of a book about immigration. The Upper Grammar class did an Ellis Island simulation. Each boy was assigned a role, and was required to go through the lines and questions, just like he was arriving at Ellis Island as a new American. Well, it wasn't exactly like Ellis Island! Both the Upper and Lower Grammar classes made fun Statue of Liberty crowns and torches. The Five in a Row class read the book, "Good Night Moon." In this classic book, children get a chance to say good night to all the items in a room. The kids then made collages out of pictures of things that they would like to say "good night" to!
