Co-op in Review: May 2, 2013
Gold! This week, we learned about gold! The younger kids read about the Klondike Gold Rush in Alaska. While older kids were learning about the gold standard and how our money was once guaranteed with gold. They also learned about the politics of gold, the gold purists and those who thought our money could be backed with silver as well. The kids also learned about Booker T. Washington and the muck rackers--the first of what we now call investigative journalists. The dialectic class studied the gold standard. They made graphs of the ups and down of the price of gold through the last one hundred plus years. The Upper Grammar class made Wanted Posters with their pictures and Gold Rush advertisements. The Lower Grammar kids made gold nameplates with their pictures on them. The Five in a Row class read the book, "Katy No Pocket". It's the story of a mama kangaroo who has no pocket! The kids then made aprons, like the one Katy wore to carry her baby!
